Late night retouching music mood.  It’s like Fiona Apple mated with Massive Attack and made a sexy raspy electronic soulful baby called Banks.

The amazing French actress Elodie Yung featured in my latest cover editorial for Audrey Magazine’s Spring Issue!  She’s like a breath of fresh air!  It’s so nice to photograph someone as genuine and sweet as her.

You might not recognize her just yet but you will catch Elodie in G.I. Joe Retaliation as Jinx and you might remember her in a small but memorable role in David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Total girl crush on Elodie!

cedricpittman asked: I love you cinematic lighting style. How much post is involved with your looks, or is it all lighting?

Thanks Cedric!  It’s mostly lighting (or at least I try to make it mostly lighting!)  I will fix exposure issues in post if I have to but I try to do everything in camera to minimize the amount of time I spend in post

Special thanks to Sabrina Noel Hill for doing a great job of shooting and editing the BTS video!

A total blast from the past archive!  And my attempt at being anecdotal.
I randomly stumbled upon this photo posted on facebook and I had forgotten that I had scanned this print. I remember taking this photo 10 years ago on my Canon AE-1 on Kodak 400 ISO film at Town Hall Theatre in Lafayette, CA. My part-time job while I was going to college was working backstage as a stage hand at a community live theatre.  For my photography class, I think everyone else had serious documentary-style gritty subjects while I chose to document the actors I worked with. When I presented this series for class critique and review, I remember my professor saying, “These are fun to look at but they have no substance.”  I was crushed.
Little did I know that I would venture into photography professionally and shoot the same thing years later.  I gotta say, looking at this photo now, I’m pretty impressed with my 18 year old self for doing a darn good printing job in the darkroom that still holds up to my today’s contrast and exposure aesthetics. Especially since I had no idea what the heck I was doing and shot on film in low light woohoo!
So, my point to this overly long winded story is —- shoot what you gravitate towards and are fascinated by.  Shoot what makes you happy.  When I was 18 and had no idea what I wanted to do but I shot the people around me because I loved that environment and it was all I knew.  I wish I didn’t listen to my professor and care what he had said.  I would be so much more experienced if I just kept shooting.  As you can tell, I still love photographing actors.  Chances are, I will still love what I do fifty years from now (*fingers crossed*)!!!

Current mood music for retouching: September by St. Lucia

I discovered St. Lucia last Saturday when I saw them open for Ellie Goulding and they were so good that I immediately bought their CD.  (Haven’t done that in a long time at a concert.)  I love how their music sound like the 80s. Nostalgic awesomeness.
